4 Questions to Ask When Choosing Countertops

4 Questions to Ask When Choosing Countertops

If you’re designing your own home or moving into a newly constructed home, you’ll likely get to choose a lot of features in your kitchen design — including countertops. Even if you’re just doing a kitchen or remodel, you’ll need to make some decisions about the changes you want to see. With so many options, it can seem pretty overwhelming! So, here are four questions you should ask yourself when choosing your countertops.

  1. How Are You Planning to Use Your Countertops?

Are you someone who actively uses the countertops in your kitchen, or are they just there for show? If you’re always chopping on and using your counters in the kitchen, you’ll need to look for countertops that can withstand some use and not get scratched or stained easily. Quartz, laminate, or solid surface countertops will likely be the best choice for you as they can withstand some heat and won’t show scratches or other abrasions as easily.

However, if you don’t use your kitchen counters often, you won’t have to worry much about stains or marks. You can safely choose your countertops for looks alone. Marble may be an excellent choice for you.

  1. How Much Maintenance Are You Prepared to Do?

Some countertops require almost constant maintenance — which some people don’t mind doing. But if you don’t have the time or energy to do more than wipe up your crumbs every so often, you certainly don’t want to choose countertops that require a lot of maintenance. Laminate or quartz are both fantastic low-maintenance choices which still look beautiful.

  1. What’s Your Budget?

Let’s face it, some countertop choices are more expensive than others. If you have a high budget or only a small area to work with, you can probably splurge on quartz or marble for your kitchen countertops. However, if your budget is limited, or you’ll need to get a lot of materials for a large space, you’ll probably want to look at less expensive countertop options, such as laminate or solid surface.

  1. What Do You Like?

Although it may be a bit of a splurge, or it may require more maintenance than you had originally wanted, if you’ve always dreamed of having marble or solid wood countertops in your kitchen, now’s your chance! Even if it seems like your best choice, if you’re not going to be happy with laminate —don’t get it simply because you think you should. You’ll end up resenting the new kitchen space, and that’s a recipe for disaster.
